Exercise Weights

The two most basic forms of exercise weights are dumbbells and barbells. The dumbbell can be held in one hand and can be lifted in that way, strengthening the bicep. A barbell has weights on both sides and needs to be gripped with both hands in order to lift it. This is more commonly used by weight lifters committed to improving their strength.

There are also exercise weights systems available that are designed to target specific parts of the body. These exercise weights typically utilize a series of pullies and attach to an immobile frame. Examples of this kind of system include smith machines, the leg press and the mechanical shoulder press.

Exercise weights designed to target most muscles in the body are available. Alternating your workout by using a number of different weight machines can also maintain safety by eliminating strain on the same area of the body over and over again. Of course, having many of these machines will take up quite a bit of space. Not having this space is one reason some people choose to have small, ergonomic dumbbells that they can lift in most any setting. The best choice for you will just depend on your available space and budget.
